Growing pains - 17 August 2009 |

A number of years ago I heard an elderly Minister at the church I was then attending talk about his Christian life. As I remember, he’d been converted some time during his teenage years, and for several months after that had been full of joy and excitement about his new-found life in Christ.
But then, quite out of the blue, his Christian life hit what felt like a very rocky patch. He began to be deeply troubled by an intense sense of guilt at his sinfulness. Growing pains on the way to a fuller, richer grasp of God’s holiness, perhaps. But nonetheless (like all of our heavenly Father’s loving discipline) troubling and painful at the time.
Hebrews 7:20-28 and passages like it are a particular blessing at such times. A great dollop of God-ordained encouragement, declaring that absolute and unsurpassed sufficiency of Jesus as our great High Priest. Get a load of that.
