Here are some of the questions for week 6 of the Guided Reading Course.

    Calvin, Institutes, I.x-xii

    1. Why does Calvin object to statues or images of God? (I.xi.1-2) What further reasons are set out in I.xi.9-10

    2. What counter-arguments does Calvin address in I.xi.3? Are you persuaded?

    3. Why does Calvin reject images of God even for ‘the uneducated’ (I.xi.5-7)?

    4. What, in Calvin’s view, are artists permitted to reproduce (I.xi.12)? What implications does Calvin’s argument have?

    5. How would you respond to each of the allegedly scriptural arguments in favour of images discussed in I.xi.14-15?

    6. What is the ‘wily distinction,’ and how does Calvin respond to it (I.xi.11; cf. I.xii.2-3)?
