Anyone tempted to swallow the oft-repeated canard that John Calvin was a spiky, intemperate, ungracious controversialist should listen to this lecture by the Revd Dr David Field, given recently at New St Andrews College in Moscow, Idaho.
It would also do a great deal of good to anyone inclined to pursue the approach to theological controversy that some (wrongly) ascribe to Calvin. For our Reformed forefathers took a far more nuanced to disagreements between Christians. For example, who do you think said this?
If we allow love to be our guide, all will be safe.
