He may be an heretic… - 14 December 2009 |

One of the delights of the first Study Day at the London Theological Seminary’s John Owen Centre was getting to grips with the 16th-century divine William Whitaker. Whitaker was an Episcopalian and a hard-core Calvinist, who according to Garry Williams (director of the JOC) had absolutely no time at all for ‘papists’.
Even Bellarmine, the leading Medieval Catholic theologian, respected Whitaker – so much so that he hung a portrait of the great Protestant on the wall of his study. When Bellarmine was asked about why he had a picture of ‘that heretic’ gazing at him all day long, Bellarmine is reported to have replied, ‘He may be an heretic, but he is a learned heretic.’
