Christian families in the UK have recently had a let-off. The Badman Report, which (if it had been adopted, and its principles consistently applied) would have threatened every family with government inspection to ensure the ‘quality’ of their childrearing, was recently rejected by a select committee.
Three cheers?
Yes and no.
Yes, better than it could have been, for the time being. But I’m afraid anyone who thinks that Christian families can now relax, confident of freedom from state intrusion for the foreseeable future, is likely to be disappointed. The very fact that such an outrageous scheme as that outlined in the Badman Report could have been proposed in the first place should give us pause for thought. And what with the British Humanist Association and even the occasional BBC presenter lining up to take pot-shots at evangelicals, there’s still likely to be plenty to contend with in the coming years.
That’s why I’m delighted to announce the 2010 Emmanuel Evangelical Church Family Conference, featuring as speakers Ian Fry, Pastor of Fetcham Community Church, Surrey, and our very own David Field.
Jesus is gonna win, no question about that. But what are we supposed to do in the meantime?
